What is depression

Depression is a complex mental health condition characterised by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a lack of interest or pleasure in activities that a person once enjoyed. It can affect how you feel, think, and handle daily activities, such as sleeping, eating, or working. Depression isn’t just about feeling sad; it’s a serious medical condition that can interfere with daily life and may require long-term treatment.

The impact of depression on a person can be profound and multifaceted:

Depression often brings about overwhelming feelings of sadness, emptiness, or despair. It can lead to a sense of hopelessness, worthlessness, and guilt. People with depression may experience frequent crying spells or irritability.

Depression can manifest physically, resulting in symptoms such as fatigue, changes in appetite or weight, sleep disturbances (insomnia or excessive sleeping), and various aches and pains. It can also weaken the immune system and make individuals more susceptible to other illnesses.

Depression can affect cognitive functions such as concentration, memory, and decision-making abilities. Individuals may find it difficult to focus on tasks, make decisions, or remember things.

Depression can strain relationships with family, friends, and colleagues. It may lead to social withdrawal, isolation, and a decreased desire to engage in social activities. This can exacerbate feelings of loneliness and alienation.

Depression can impair performance at work or school. It may lead to absenteeism, decreased productivity, and difficulty meeting responsibilities. In severe cases, it can result in job loss or academic failure.

Depression often undermines self-care routines. People may neglect their hygiene, stop exercising, or engage in unhealthy behaviours such as substance abuse or self-harm as coping mechanisms.

In severe cases, depression can increase the risk of suicide. Feelings of hopelessness and despair may become overwhelming, leading individuals to contemplate or attempt suicide. It’s crucial for anyone experiencing suicidal thoughts to seek immediate help.
